This morning, your expert mountaineering tour guide and four wheel drive pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa to take you for your Nevado Coropuna expedition. We follow the road that leads us to the Cotahuasi canyon, world´s deepest canyon and along the way we witness priceless views of the Pallacocha lagoon and the beautiful Majes valley. After a journey of 6 to 7 hours, we reach our starting point at 5000 m. After a light meal, we start our 2 hour climb to our base camp located on 5400 m. Arriving at the base camp, your tour guide will prepare a hot coca tea for you and we spend the rest of the afternoon at the base camp, to stretch our legs and to get used to the high altitude. We spend the night at tents with warm sleeping bags.
Today your tour guide will wake you up very early in the morning at 3 AM. After a light breakfast and a coca tea to get you warm, we start our climb to the top of the highest volcano of Peru. We climb for 6 to 7 hours to reach the summit of the Coropuna volcano at 6425 meters. Congratulations, you made it to the top of the highest volcano of Peru! Once we have some excellent pictures of the ice-caps and the glacier valleys, we hike down to our base camp for approximately 3 hours. We spend the night at our base camp.
After we collect our belongings, we hike down to 5000 m to reach the road again, where our driver is waiting for us to transfer us back to Arequipa. After a journey of 6 to 7 hours, we reach the Peruvian white city Arequipa again and your driver will transfer you back to your hotel. What do I need to carry?
You need to carry your personal belongings. This includes your sleeping bag, tent, clothes etc. Besides, you need to carry 5 liters of water; 4 liters is drinking water for you and 1 liter is for the guide to cook. Although you may be used to carrying a heavy pack, the altitudes makes a difference and we recommend hiring a porter.
What if I get sick of altitude?
Before climbing the Coropuna volcano, we strongly recommend you are acclimatized to high altitudes. You can acclimatize spending time in Cusco (3400 m) or in Puno (3800 m) before travelling to Arequipa. Everyone responds different to altitude and age, health problems and athleticism do not enter in it. It is very individual and it can vary from visit to visit to the same person. Some people might suffer from some side effects of the altitude, such as a bit headache and exhaustion. Here are some tips to help your body acclimatize to the altitude:
At the base camp of the Coropuna volcano, temperatures drop down to – 8 °C and -9 °C at night. On the top of the Coropuna volcano, temperatures range from -10 °C to – 11 °C and there is more wind.Can I hire a porter?
Yes, you can hire a porter for an additional $ 60 USD per day. The porter can carry up to 18 kilos, so 2 people can share a porter and can split the price. Although, you may be used to carrying a heavy pack, it is recommend hiring a porter, as the altitude makes a difference.How many people are in the group?
We work with small groups, minimum 2 and maximum 5 people. In case there are more people in the group, there will be an extra tour guide.What food is included?
We provide light and easy digestible meals, such as pastas, soups and sandwiches. We also take enough coca tea with us, as this increases the absorption of oxygen in the blood. Should you have special requirements for meals or you have allergies, just let us know and we will prepare other meals accordingly.What equipment is provided?
We provide all the equipment for you and this is included in the package price. We provide tents, mattress and climbing gear such as crampons, ice axe and ropes. Only the sleeping bag and the hiking boots are not included, but this can be rent for an additional price at our office in Arequipa. Hiking boots can be rented for $ 8 USD per day and the sleeping bag for $ 5 USD per day.
